At least, four farmers have been killed in a resumed Fulani herdsmen attack in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The attack, which happened on Monday in the Mgbuji Autonomous Community, left several others wounded.
Although both the state government and Nigeria Police have remained silent over the resumed attack, as of the time of filing this report, videos and pictures of the incident our correspondent obtained on Wednesday show gory images of the slain farmers being recovered from their farms.
Residents of the community, who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday morning on the telephone, confirmed that the victims – three adults and a young man of about 20 years old identified as Izuchukwu Uzu were farmers.
One of the community leaders, Samuel Ede, expressed despair at the incident, saying, “We are tired and despondent. The government only mobilises security agents after every attack to collect corpses, but they don’t do anything to prevent the attacks or engage the assailants.”
The community leader lamented the government’s tardy response to security challenges, noting it only reacts after the damage has been done. “What is the point of security if they can’t prevent attacks?” he asked.
A resident and member of the neighbourhood, Okibe Ogenyi, corroborated the figures, stating that four corpses had been recovered and deposited in the morgue. “This incident happened on Monday and after the attacks, three bodies were recovered and the last one was recovered yesterday (Tuesday) in the afternoon.”
Describing the situation as a “guerrilla war,” Okibe lamented, “Our people are already tired and despondent because you don’t know when the assailants will come. It’s like a guerrilla war now. We have a large farm concentration, and when you think you have secured one side, the assailants will launch an attack through another area.”
The recent attack is coming barely three months after women from seven autonomous communities in Eha-Amufu protested against incessant attacks by Fulani herdsmen. The protests highlighted the killings of hundreds of farmers and raping of women since 2021.
According to reports, at least, 152 persons have been killed by Fulani herdsmen in Eha-Amufu between 2021 and March 2025. With the recent killings, the tally has now increased to 156 killed while over 49 kidnap
Efforts to reach the local council chairman, Obiora Obeagu, for his comment failed as he did not answer calls to his telephone number, and a text message sent to him remained unresponded to, even after he had read it.
The Enugu State Police Command has also yet to issue an official statement on the incident. The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, was unreachable, as he did not take calls or respond to a text message seeking his reaction.
The lack of response from the authorities has further heightened tensions in the community, with residents calling for urgent action to address the security situation.
