The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Sunday, expressed sorrow over the death of 22 members of the Kano State contingent to the recently concluded National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.
This was contained in his condolence message to Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State and the families of the deceased.
The Senate President represented President Bola Tinubu at the closing ceremony of the games in Abeokuta on Friday.
Akpabio in the statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, described the incident as a “devastating loss” and a sobering reminder of the need to prioritise the safety and welfare of Nigerian youths.
“It is with profound sadness that I received the news of the tragic death of 22 members of the Kano State contingent that participated in the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
“This devastating loss is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of our citizens, particularly our youth. We stand in solidarity with the families of the deceased and pray for their swift healing and comfort during this difficult time”, he said.
Akpabio further prayed for the souls of the departed to rest in peace, adding that their memories should inspire a collective commitment to a safer Nigeria.
The 22 victims were reportedly part of the state’s delegation returning from the biennial sports festival when tragedy struck.
Full details of the incident have yet to be officially released.
The National Sports Festival, which draws athletes from across Nigeria, serves as a platform for promoting unity and discovering talent.
The tragedy has cast a pall over what had otherwise been a celebration of youth, sportsmanship, and national pride.
